甲醛可能令部分人士產生皮膚刺激反應，美國接觸性皮膚炎協會(ACDS)更將甲醛列為2015年的「年度致敏物質」。有研究指，較高濃度的甲醛(200至300ppm)可致皮膚炎，如有傷口、易敏感皮膚或濕疹人士更要小心。

Bronopol is an antimicrobial preservative that works by forming formaldehyde in cosmetic products. People exposed to such formaldehyde-releasing ingredients may develop a formaldehyde allergy or an allergy to the ingredient itself. In the U.S. approximately 20% of cosmetics and personal care products contain a formaldehyde-releaser and the frequency of contact allergy to these ingredients is much higher among Americans compared to studies in Europe.
