Cassia obtusifolia or Chinese senna extract is marketed as an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-redness ingredient. It’s usage level in skincare is around 2-4%. Known active compounds of this ingredient includes anthraquinones and polysaccharides. The seeds (which is the part used in cosmetics) have been said to improve redness and itchiness and to inhibit fungal growth. Unfortunately, these claims are from biased suppliers of this ingredient and not independent lab studies.

Cassia gum, an extract of the seeds of Chinese senna (S. obtusifolia), is used as a thickening agent.
