This medication is used to treat acne. It may decrease the number and severity of acne pimples and promote quick healing of pimples that do develop. Adapalene belongs to a class of medications called retinoids. It works by affecting the growth of cells and decreasing swelling and inflammation. Your acne may get worse during the first few weeks of treatment, and it may take 8 to 12 weeks or longer before you feel the full benefit of adapalene. Pimples can take 6 to 8 weeks to form under the skin, and during the first weeks of your treatment, adapalene may bring these pimples to the skin surface, which is good. Differin cream and gel both contain the active ingredient adapalene 0.1%, which is a retinoid medicine - a derivative of vitamin A. Adapalene works by increasing the turnover of skin cells. ... Adapalene also acts as an anti-inflammatory, reducing redness and swelling in the skin.
